Research & Development
Fordras S.A. originates in the R&D tradition of SOLAR CHEMICAL S.A., a group of European chemical companies that, over the years, has led to the filing of numerous patents worldwide.
Our competitive edge comes mainly from our ability to remain at the forefront of innovation through proprietary products, technologies, and applications, having invested from the inception in necessary resources toward research and development. Consequently, Fordras S.A. holds several patents and patents pending on a broad range of applications for egg-derived proteins and other biological products. Fordras was the first company to recognize the value of Lysozyme in the food industry by developing its’ application in dairy products, particularly in cheese making.
Later, Fordras S.A. and its world-class staff of scientists and researchers led the way in developing the use of Lysozyme in winemaking and brewing. Fordras obtained essential use patents for applying Lysozyme in fermented beverages through these efforts.
Fordras continues to lead by financing new research programs and in-house institutions such as Oregon State University, Universitá di Udine, ITV France, AWRI (Australian Wine Research Institute), and The University of Wisconsin. In early 2005, one of Fordras’ sponsored research programs at OSU (which focused on using Lysozyme in food packaging and coating materials) led to developing proprietary technology in that field.
Additionally, Fordras S.A. has been a forerunner in developing Avidin as a marker in cancer treatment. This research program, initiated in 1994 in collaboration with the European Institute of Oncology, is entering its final phase this year. This revolutionary radioimmunology technique, “which has shown virtually no toxicity, has successfully been applied to the treatment of brain cancer called gliobastoma1“

Current and future research programs are dedicated to developing new applications for Lysozyme, Avidin, and Ovalbumin for human and animal health, in consumer products and the food markets, and to producing and using additional synergic natural products.
Regulatory Compliance
At Fordras, we believe establishing a rigorous and effective Regulatory program is necessary to successfully bring one’s R&D pipeline to market. In this case, once again, Fordras has been the leader. Through the strength of its’ pharmaceutical background along with sensitivity to the safety needs of the consumers, Fordras often anticipated government regulations. As shown in the timetable below, Fordras was the first company to obtain important recognition and approval from governmental agencies and organizations, including GRAS status. Today, Fordras remains the only company with a Drug Master File for using Lysozyme in pharmaceutical applications. Thanks to Fordras’ efforts, the USDA approved Lysozyme for use in organic products.
Marketing & Distribution
At Fordras, we believe our customers are our most important assets. Consequently, we strive to provide them with the highest quality products, innovative applications, and customer service.
Our products are marketed and distributed worldwide, directly or through a network of highly reputable distributors for each industry we serve.
Due to the versatility of our products in general, and of Lysozyme in particular, Fordras serves customers in several industries that require different expertise for their individual needs. Fordras rises to the challenge by maintaining on-staff experts in each attended market. These skilled professionals interact with our distributors and/or directly with the end-users to address every question they might have.
In cheese making, for example, we offer complete customer service for the Artisinal and Specialty cheesemaker, with testing of milk for Clostridium tyrobutyricum at the Vermont Institute of Artisinal Cheese in Burlington and our laboratory in Lugano, Switzerland. We provide a complete and accurate diagnosis with dosage recommendations based on your needs. Our choices of packaging can be tailored to suit your particular requirements.
In winemaking, we have recently taken our customer service program further. After adding an oenologist to our Q&A team and providing our customers with in-house lab services and consultation on an individual basis, we then engaged two internationally renowned oenologists as part of our consulting team to advise our customers, keep them informed through symposiums and publications plus provide hands-on consultation directly at their cellars worldwide.
